Here is a great tool to calculate the volume or capacity of your pool. Important! Measure from the depth of the water rather than the height of your wall.

More complicated pool shapes will require multiple calculations. For help, contact a swimming pool professional.

Geometric Formulas

Use these basic formulas to calculate surface areas:

Legend Description
AArea
LLength
WWidth
HHeight
rRadius
dDiameter
Pi3.14 constant
  • Rectangle: A = L × W
  • Triangle: A = (L × W) / 2
  • Circle: A = π × r²

Calculating Volume

Include depth to calculate cubic volume. Divide into sections by depth for accuracy.

Constant Depth Pools (Square or Rectangular)

Formula: Length × Width × Depth × 7.5 = Gallons

Variable Depth Pools

Formula: Length × Width × Avg. Depth × 7.5 = Gallons

Average Depth: (Shallow + Deep) ÷ 2

Circular Pools

Formula: π × r² × Avg. Depth × 7.5 = Gallons

Irregular or Kidney Shapes

Formula: 0.45 × (A + B) × Length × Avg. Depth × 7.5 = Gallons

Conversions and Notes:

  • 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons
  • 1 cubic foot = 62.4 lbs water
  • 1 gallon water = 8.33 lbs
  • 1 ppm = 8.3 lbs of chemical per 1M gallons

Be sure to use the water depth, not total container depth, for accurate chemical dosing.
